The furthest travelers were John Leys from New York/New Jersey and Chris Seibert and Steve Dusablon from Portland. All three played superbly, Johnny making it to the quarterfinals with Jody Welch, and Chris and Steve reaching the finals, ultimately losing to the powerhouse team of Alexis Deschenes and Patrick Scrickel of Chaos. I would like to thank everyone who attended for making the Sole Jam a great event. Our turnout of high level players was excellent thanks mostly to the Chaos crew and surrounding Bay area kickers. The best performance by a Santa Cruz Footbag Club team was Angel Rodriguez and Chris Young, who finished 7th overall. Congrats guys! I hope to see many more of you next year. It appears as if this event is a keeper and a great warm up for the Green Cup in Oakland!
Every week isolated groups of footbaggers make the calls to round up a foursome, set up their nets, and play.
Soul Jam is the opportunity to unite in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA and to indulge in that same ritual of high flying, tattoo delivering glory. For new and old footbag players, amateurs and pros, and players who've not touched a footbag in several years, this is the chance for the ultimate non tournament-feeling kick.
Combining pool play or round-robin structure, loads of pickup games, and chillaxing in true coastal California style, the Soul Jam is already enveloping your soul as you read the event description.
It will be an event to experience.
The venue for the Soul Jam will be Monterey Avenue Park, located at 688 Monterey Ave. in Capitola, just above the Capitola Village. The venue offers convenient access to the beach, several fine dining establishments, and a shopper's haven (i.e., less than 1 mile). On Saturday, play will begin by 10:30AM and conclude by no later than 6PM. On Sunday, free play may begin as early as 10AM and must conclude by 5PM. Driving directions: Coming from NORTH: Take I-880 which turns into CA-17 S Merge right onto CA-1 S toward WATSONVILLE/MONTEREY. Take the Porter/BAY exit. Make right onto Bay. Travel past the 3rd stop sign. Make Left onto Monterey (there is no light or stop sign here, only a left hand turn. If you hit a 4th stop sign you've missed the left turn). End at Monterey Park on your right. Coming from SOUTH: Take HWY 1 North. Exit Park Ave. Turn Left onto Park Ave. Turn Right onto Kennedy. Stay Straight to go onto Monterey Ave. End at 688 Monterey ave on left. I will likely be offering my townhome as a refuge for out-of-town players who don't mind sleeping on a carpeted floor. I have one spare bedroom and a huge livingroom if people choose my free accomodations. Saturday will be a structured doubles net day while Sunday will be reserved for pickup games and miscellaneous fun. Based upon the players' preferences, however, the doubles "final" may occur on Sunday morning rather than late Saturday afternoon. A player's dinner will be held at a restaurant likely in downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday night, followed by a night of miscellaneous fun in downtown for interested parties. Please contact me if you are interested in staying with me so that I may gauge how many sleepers I will need to accomodate. If a hotel is more your style, give me a price range, and I'll do my best to find something for you. Please contact me if you need driving directions to Santa Cruz.
